What do you believe about karma?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for December 03, 2008:
I believe in the basic principle of karma, that good encourages more good. However, I also believe that bad things (unfortunately) happen to good people. I think that actual karma does not exist, but the idea that if you do something good, more good will ensue is quite evident. This is shown through the movie "Pay It Forward." Do one nice act, and hopefully that niceness will be passed on. And I believe that is true. When people are nice to me, I am more likely to have a nice attitude toward others. The oppisite is true as well; if people are negative toward me, I am more likely going to have a negative attitude. But I don't think this prinicple is controlled by an essence know as karma, but it is simply a priniciple of human nature.
On the other hand, bad things do happen to good people. So it seems...There are people on this earth who are seen as "good," and people who are seen as "bad." But we all know that nobody is perfect. So do bad things happen to "good" people, or do bad things happen to "not so bad" people? No one is perfect and consequently, bad things happen in this world that will affect us all, good or bad, in one way or another.
